Social Insurance Officer
Bilsthorpe born and bred, Ian Gill is the man miners past and present can turn to for information, advice and help on social issues and benefits.
A UDM member since its formation in 1985, Ian has more than 30 years' experience in mining. He took on the role of Social Insurance Officer in 2001.
He says: “I'm also here to support the families of past and present mineworkers in cases of bereavement, and to provide financial support in the form of help with benefits and grants etc.
“It's also my role to liaise with other organisations, such as the Coal Industry Benevolent Trust, Coal Industry Social Welfare Organisations, Department for Work and Pensions and the Tribunal Service.”
Ian worked at Bilsthorpe pit until it closed in 1997. His pit jobs have included conveyor fitter and coal face worker, machine driver and roadway development and repairs. He also had a four-year spell as administrator with BTCV Enterprises.
This experience has provided the grounding for his present role helping and advising 600 union members as well as the general public, as he's also local accounts manager for the UDM's personal accident insurance policy.
One of his specialised roles is representing members at Medical and Social Security Appeals Tribunals and his breadth of knowledge takes in industrial injuries and industrial diseases such as pneumoconiosis, silicosis, chronic bronchitis, asbestosis, vibration white finger and carpal tunnel syndrome.
A former Trustee of the Nottinghamshire Miners' Pension Scheme, Ian is currently a local Agent for the Midland Miners' Fatal Accident Relief Society.
