Welbeck – at work since 1912
Since its debut in 1912, Welbeck Colliery near Mansfield has worked three seams of the Nottinghamshire coalfield – The Deepsoft, Parkgate and Top Hard.
Some 320 of our members were employed at the UK Coal Colliery which produced around 1.4m tonnes a year, primarily from the Deep Soft seam.
Sadly production has finally come to an end at Welbeck Colliery with the last shear of coal being taken off 243 Retreat Face in the deep soft seam on 10th May 2010 by Johnny Greens Team!! Or was it Ray Nunns??? (A bit of old banter Johnny that’s all!!)
This brings an end to almost 100 years of mining history from Welbeck and the end of a dependable source of local employment.
I would like to extend my appreciation to all men and women who have worked at Welbeck Colliery, past and present, and to all those who have gone before us! And like the old pit herself, never to be forgotten.
Welbeck Colliery 1912 – 2010
On a more positive note most of the workforce at Welbeck has been offered a transfer to Thoresby Colliery, or Daw Mill Colliery in Warwickshire. This will give the men continued employment and also allows the company to keep the skills of these experienced miners, which will enable UK Coal to man up Harworth Colliery if the project finally gets the go ahead.
